The military jacket was undoubtedly the signature staple of last season. The Balmain jacket making it's debut during Paris Fashion Week in August 2009 was easily the most recognised catwalk image of last year. The trend was adopted across the fashion world in an instant; high profile stars such as Rihanna, Victoria Beckham and Beyoncé Knowles were all snapped sporting the jacket. The "nation's sweetheart" Cheryl Cole even adopted the look as her signature costume during promotion for her first solo single, "Fight for this Love". While her jacket of choice was a Julien McDonald creation rather than the Balmain jacket of the moment, she still catapulted the look into the high street and every little girl swooned over the bold red, shoulder pads and exquisite gold detailing. The look has since carried on into the current season with Balmain continuing with the distingtive shoulders and detailing. I allow my take on the military trend to be influenced by bands such as The Libertines, hence Pete Doherty's signature trilby. Also, I have tried to adopt the look in a subtle and wearable way, needless to say a leotard and haarem pants are not a good look for the office. However, to turn this look into a more of a statement one need only switch the trousers for leather leggings (Horace Leather Front Leggings Asos £150) and, particulary bold, switch the tee for a lace vest or leotard (Lace Bodysuit Warehouse £28).
